Life-long knitters May Elbaz-Belschner and Zairi Malcolm share a passion for all things fiber and expressing their creativity together. After opening their first location in Windham in 2018, they have now established a second in yet another Greene County Mountain Town. The Knitting Room in Tannersville is a true destination for supplies, advice, collaboration, and community.
Before relocating to Greene County, May and her husband worked in the film industry in NYC as a costumer and a grip respectively. Together with Zairi, they were looking for a ‘retirement occupation’ that incorporated the things they are passionate about. They knew they wanted to live and work in a place they loved, and chose the natural splendor of the Great Northern Catskill Mountains.
The Knitting Room is not only a source for carefully curated yarns and tools, it has established itself as a place to meet, learn, and share ideas. The selection of yarns and fibre is astounding, and the open area workspace is the perfect setting for getting together. The Knitting Room hosts regular events, classes, and workshops, but also features manufacturers in what they call Trunk Shows. These makers bring a trunk full of their creations for all to examine, admire, and be inspired.
Another popular gathering is titled ‘Knit-Flix’. Enthusiasts come together for a community screening of a feature film, and, of course, knit!
From beginners to experts, the welcoming staff is always ready to assist both customers and browsers along their fiber-art journey. Located at 6036 Main St, Tannersville, NY, the shop is open 12N to 5PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Mondays – 10AM to 5PM on Saturdays & Sundays (Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays).
