Investments in Outdoor Adventure Lead to Business Expansion in Tannersville, NY

Nick Bove and Lori Torgersen truly understand the concept of “If you build it, they will come”.  These proprietors of Coxsackie Bike & Sport and Windham Mountain Outfitters are hearty proponents of the development and expansion of outdoor adventure experiences in Greene County. Bove founded and leads the Windham Area Recreation Foundation (WARF).

WARF has been instrumental in the development of over 25 miles of preeminent singletrack mountain bike trails in Windham as well as the creation of the Windham Path – a beautiful 2 mile loop with 8 foot bridges that features scenic views of mountains, streams and beaver dams and provides walking, running, biking and cross-county skiing opportunities to enthusiasts of all levels of abilities.

The continuing development of Greene County as a four-season outdoor destination includes the connection of mountain-top communities with hiking and biking trails, the new Kaaterskill Falls viewing platform and trail improvements, and expanded water sport activities on Greene County lakes, creeks and the Hudson River.  All of these investments attract a growing number of visitors to the area, and with them, opportunities for business expansion.

To serve this market, Bove and Torgersen have opened a third enterprise – Hunter Mountain Outfitters in Tannersville, bringing their expertise in biking and skiing sales, rentals and repairs to yet another Catskill Mountain destination. While the services offered are similar to those of their other two businesses, the new shop has a personality very much of its own.

A fully restored and customized building, located along Route 23A on the east end of Tannersville, has been nearly doubled in size to include an expanded selection of products for hiking, camping, fishing and just about any outdoor activity you can think of. Visitors can find tents, sleeping bags, leisure-wear clothing & shoes, back-country lanterns, rain ponchos, camp showers, insect repellent, hats, shades, outdoor toys & games including disc golf, fishing poles & reels, hiking boots, mountain & road bike clothing, knives and outdoor electronics.

Additionally, a key feature and attraction is an indoor climbing room where scramblers of any age can safely repel from wall to wall and/or get a bouldering experience.

“There are many good reasons for us doing this now,” Bove said of the expansion, noting that WARF trail crews are now busy on the Hunter side of the hills creating new singletrack mountain bike trails and multi-use paths.

“We did massive renovations, making a real investment in the community. We’re happy to be here,” said Bove, “and happy to support the outdoor adventures of our visitors to and residents of Greene County.”

During the early summer season, Hunter Mountain Outfitters is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Telephone 518-589-6400 or check out their website at for information.
