When the beloved Nellie’s restaurant hit the market, Irish immigrant and long-time East Durham enthusiast Mike Reilly saw a chance to invest in a community he’s cherished for decades. Now reopened as Reilly’s Bar & Restaurant, the venue continues its legacy as a lively Irish pub, complete with live music, special events, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Mike first came to the U.S. in 1989, but his heart remained closely tied to his Irish roots. He made regular visits to East Durham, drawn by the East Durham Irish Festival and the strong cultural ties within the community.
“I always had a liking for East Durham,” Mike shared.
For over ten years, Mike, his wife Sonia, and their five children have spent summers camping at Blackthorne Resort. In 2020, they deepened their connection to the area by purchasing the former McKenna’s Motel on Route 145, now known as McReilly’s Resort.
Mike brings with him a wealth of experience in hospitality, as the owner of two other Irish pubs—The Dugout, located in County Leitrim, Ireland, and Woodside, NY. He also runs a construction company based in Queens.
When Nellie’s became available, the Reilly family knew it was the perfect next step. With a menu that blends classic bar favorites like burgers and wings with traditional Irish staples such as bangers and mash, Reilly’s offers something for everyone.
Looking ahead, Mike envisions the space hosting private events including weddings, birthdays, and other special gatherings, making Reilly’s a true community hub.
Whether you’re craving a taste of Ireland or just a great night out in East Durham, Reilly’s Bar & Restaurant is ready to welcome you. Reilly’s kitchen is open daily from 5-10 p.m. with music kicking off at 9 p.m.
