With the gaming industry booming all across the United States, Greene County is no exception to the popularity of gaming centers and their success. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Kirwan’s Game Store in Catskill was named Small Business of the Year by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce.
Located on Main Street in the former Looking Pretty dress shop and Van Gorder’s stationary shop, Kirwan’s is occupied by a young and enthusiastic clientele of gamers—most notably on the weekends, when events and tournaments routinely bring over 100 players and their families into the store and onto Main Street. Pro-Tour events for Magic and other trading-card games top the list of interactive weekend offerings, but there is a full calendar of board gaming and other events going on all week long.
On sale at Kirwan’s is a variety of gaming equipment for classic trading card games (Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and DragonBall Z) as well as role-playing games (Axis and Allies, and Dungeons and Dragons). They also sell video games and video game systems, but the majority of the business revolves around in-store and on-line gaming activities and tournaments.
Kirwan’s Game Store is keeping the interest of Greene County’s youngest residents, while stimulating the economy of neighboring businesses. In addition, Kirwan’s is generous with donations to local community groups. The Chamber of Commerce is privileged to name them Small Business of the Year.
