Ready for Some Farm Fresh Eggs, Greene County? Well Then, Rent a Chicken!

Have you ever wanted to own chickens for the benefit of having farm-fresh eggs at your fingertips every morning? Well, you’re not alone! Lots of families around the country would love to own chickens but just don’t have the space, don’t have the resources to keep the chickens healthy, or just simply don’t have the time to take good care of the chickens. That’s where a company called “Rent The Chicken” comes in handy!

“Rent The Chicken”, a nationwide enterprise, provides all the supplies you need when you rent a chicken for her fresh eggs. In the rental, the company provides: a portable chicken coop, two or four egg laying hens, 100-200 pounds of feed (optional non-GMO or Organic feed available), food & water dishes as well as instructions on how to keep your chickens happy! Within two days of the arrival, your chickens will lay eggs ready to use!  These eggs have 1/3 less cholesterol, 1/4 less saturated fats, and 2 times more omega 3 fatty acids than store bought eggs.  Your Rent The Chickens should lay 8-14 or 16-28 eggs per week depending on your Rental Package.  You will know exactly what your chickens eat!

But how does it work? The company will schedule a date to bring to your home a portable coop, two or four chickens that are already laying eggs, and the supplies needed for your rental period.  Chickens produce the most eggs when daylight is at peak. Towards the end of the Rental Period, if you realize that you were born to raise backyard chickens, adopting the chickens and all of their supplies is an option! Otherwise, they will schedule a date towards the end of your Rental to stop by and pick up the rented chickens, coop and supplies.  As soon as the start of the Rental Period comes back around, the company will schedule a time to bring your chickens back to you and provide you with another season of rental.

Slingerland Family Farm in Greenville, NY is Rent the Chicken’s Capital Region affiliate. Joshua Slingerland and Victoria Slingerland run the family farm and offer the services of Rent the Chicken. When you use Rent the Chicken, you get two or four chickens for six months for $400 or $600. The package includes a coop, food dish, water dish, food and a copy of “Fresh Eggs Daily,” a guide to caring for chickens.

After being concerned about food issues just a few years ago, the Slingerlands are now in their third full season of farming. Over a short period of time, they became popular at the co-op, where they sell eggs and poultry products. They also do direct sales of beef and pork. Slingerland said his own farming started with a few chickens. They built a coop for their kids, to give them an idea of where food comes from. They also wanted their kids to know how to care for animals, as a lesson in responsibility. They enjoyed the idea of having better food quality and producing their own food. They said what they produce is better than what you get at the grocery store. Read more about the Slingerland Family Farm from Times Union.
