REDC Awards: Increasing Greene County’s Growing Power

Greene County small businesses, Arts programs and elite cycling events are all getting a boost in 2015.

The Economic Development and Planning Council awarded $200,000 in NYS Microenterprise Assistance Program (MAP) funds to assist 8 businesses with 5 or fewer employees in the County, 5 of which will be owned by low to moderate income persons. The MAP program is targeted towards business development on Main Street and hamlet areas, and proposes to create 11 full‐time equivalent jobs.

In addition, we can expect a vibrant year for County Arts Programs. The Council on the Arts will receive $60,000 to bring a collaborative, yearlong Arts project to the region. The Catskill Mountain Foundation, Greene County Council on the Arts, Masters on Main Street, the Prattsville Art Center & Residency and the Zadock Pratt Museum will all partner to create “American Masquerade.” This yearlong project will showcase hundreds of regional visual and performing artists as they explore connections between masked identity through regional history, music, and contemporary art.

Meanwhile, Windham Area Recreation Foundation will complete the development of a comprehensive promotion and marketing plan for the 2015 Windham Mountain Bike World Cup with their $247,875 award. The World Cup is part of the most elite bike series in the world. The goal of the project is to increase participation by international elite riders and US amateur riders, expo and vendor participants, and spectators in 2015. Increased attendance to the event will help to strengthen the Windham region, and all of New York, as a premier cycling and tourist destination.
